How Does Your Garden Grow ? - Jessica Serrano

It is now 2018 and our little cabbage plant has grown and is no longer a tiny plant anymore! Our plant has a tiny cabbage growing and there is a couple of holes in the leaves of our plant which are most likely from pests or from the chickens taking bits out of our plant !

    Our plant uses photosynthesis in order to get food. Our plant uses carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen and sunlight. These are all used in order for our plant to grow. An organelle called the chloroplast  is responsible for making our planet green and for photosynthesis as well. Water and light energy combines to create oxygen. This then produces air which is needed in order for humans and animals to breathe.The plant then takes in carbon dioxide, and through the Calvin Cycle, it creates glucose which is a type of sugar. With the food, amount of sugar, and material that this plant is producing, it is able to grow because of the fuel that it has been provided with. Through cellular respiration, a plant uses sugar and oxygen to create carbon dioxide and energy. All of the resources that are being used and made help the plant grow.. Cell division has also helped add biomass to our plant or make it grow. The cells are in the tissues, so if cells keep duplicating it will need more space. Mitosis has several phases. First is interphase ,where the DNA condense into chromosomes in order to create a perfect duplicate of one another. Next is prophase, the nucleus starts to dissolve in order for the chromosomes to be able to be separated from each other. Spindle fibers additionally elongate to stretch and grab the chromosomes.IN metaphase the chromosomes line up in the middle.  In anaphase, the spindle fibers pull  chromosomes apart to opposite ends. In telophase, the outer contour pinches even more to show an obvious shape and the spindle fibers dissolve. Cytokinesis then takes place which is when the cell separates into two distinct cells.

    Enzymes can be used to help speed up mitosis or any processes.  Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) are enzymes used in photosynthesis. Enzymes are forms of proteins, they are synthesized with the aid of a ribosome in a cell. DNA is transcripted in the nucleus to form mRNA. mRNA moves into the cytoplasm of the cell and  is split into groups (thymine and uracil or adenine for DNA, then guanine and cytosine), which then creates codons. . mRNA is complementary to tRNA, which forms an anticodon to complement mRNA codons. Each codon forms a unique amino acid which is very specific. Methionine is the start in RNA and  they reach a stop codon. Then the polypeptide chain is complete which becomes a protein. This protein can then turn into an enzyme.
